Religious Education is a compulsory subject that challenges the students’ academic, personal and spiritual development.

At present Key Stage 4 students are offered either:

• a Christian Lifestyle Course, or
• GCSE Course.

Each syllabus builds upon the knowledge and skills that the students have already developed at Key Stage 3.

Christian Lifestyle Course

This course involves the study of:

1. The challenge of Jesus (God with us)
2. The challenge of Jesus in word and action
3. Living in the Christian Church
4. Living with Love
5. Living with Life

Assessment

Students present two pieces of coursework for each section and sit an exam lasting one hour and forty-five minutes in Year 12.

GCSE

Includes the study of:

• Christian Belief and Practice with reference to the Roman Catholic Tradition.  
• Christian life and St Mark’s Gospel.

Assessment

Students present one piece of coursework at the end of Year 11.  In Year 12 students present another piece of coursework and sit two exams, each one hour and thirty minutes.

Progression

Students can progress to AS/A2 Religious Studies.

Career Implications

Religious Education develops research, investigative and analytical skills.  Students can progress to University to study courses in Art, Social Sciences and Teaching and/or undertake occupations, which involve working with people e.g. Journalism, Social Work, Teaching, Youth Work, Childcare etc.

Teachers in De La Salle College have travelled to Ethiopia to practice faith in action.  These experiences provide a chance for the whole college and wider community to become involved directly in Third World activities.  Experiences are then shared with our pupils in college.
