This department aims to build upon the good work that students have undertaken in their primary colleges by stimulating a healthy interest in Science and a constructive attitude with which to question the world they live in.

It is our aim to ensure that they have the experiences to enable them to gain the necessary knowledge and understanding to:

• become confident and competent citizens in an ever increasing technical world;
• recognise the usefulness and limitations of science;
• realise that science is relevant to many aspects of everyday life.

 JUNIOR COLLEGE

 The course consists of many short modules covering different aspects of science.  They will  be allowed to carry out a wide range of experiments and handle complex pieces of apparatus,  go on trips to the planetarium and enter external science competitions.  Throughout their three  years, all areas of the curriculum are revisited and expanded to improve each student’s understanding.

 SENIOR COLLEGE

 The GCSE course followed is the AQA Modular Science programme:

 (a) Science Core Modular tests (75%); Coursework (25%); No terminal test
 (b) Additional Science Modular tests (25%); Coursework (25%); Terminal Exam (50%)
 (c) Physics Modular tests (25%); Coursework (25%); Terminal Exam (50%)
 (d) Chemistry Modular tests (25%); Coursework (25%); Terminal Exam (50%)
 (e) Biology Modular tests (25%); Coursework (25%); Terminal Exam (50%)
 
 The Science Core GCSE is assessed by modular is assessed by modular examination and  coursework with no terminal exam.  If however, your son wishes to advance to ‘A’ Level or BTec  examination level he must choose one of the other science GCSE subjects.

 A LEVEL

Advanced levels are offered in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  These are demanding courses and students would be expected to have achieved a satisfactory grade in their GCSE Double Award Science course to be considered for the ‘A’ level course.
