La Salle in the Community

Bingo CommitteeSince opening De La Salle College has always been seen as part of the community. In the beginning, when funds where short, there existed a 'Bingo Committee' consisting of representatives of the parents and the local community. Their regular Friday and Saturday night bingo sessions helped to contribute to the funds of the school but also helped develop the sense of 'our school' within the local community.

Present day we now have a well established Parents Association Commitee to continue the sense of 'our school' in the community, and the Bingo still operates on a Tuesday night from 7:30pm.

With the new school building, De La Salle have been able to throw open their doors even further to the community, with the Sports Complex being open to the various sports and recreational activities in the evening and at the weekends.

This community spirit has continued to develop with the boys being active in a number of areas including, providing Christmas hampers, visiting residential homes, offering a garden and house tidying service, helping in the local primary school and many other activities.

Organisations and Charities;

St. Vincent De Paul

Each year the school gets involved with a number of events to raise funds for St. Vincent De Paul, this year we are selling Christmas cards and having a coffee morning. It is hoped to recruit some pupils into St. Vincent De paul society in the spring 2002.

Catholics Caring

ImageThis organisations plans to provide families with Christmas presents. In school each form class collected money and then nominated someone to go and purchase a present. The class were each given a particular child and would be told their child is a ten year old boy etc. This proved very popular with the boys as they could identify with the person they were buying for.

  •   R.N.I.B.  - £1000
  •   Malcolm Sargent  . £1000

Ethiopian Campaign

Congradulations to all who helped throughout the whole Ethiopian campaign. Last year saw us raise a total of approx £68,000. A fantastic sum for all concerned. This was distributed as follows:
Father Baraki (main priest) who looks after many school projects. £20,000 to him to finish the school in Alemghana we started last year and towards the new Library and Science rooms built this year.
*  £ 18,000 to Sr Deo Gracias of the mother Teresa's sisters in the orphanage in Goba to help buy clothes, shoes, and food for the orphanage. She also said she will buy houses, yes houses and sheep for many very poor people and families. This will educate them and build a secure future forever for them.
*  £ 5,000 to the orphanage in Addis Ababa (mother Teresa's sisters)
*  £ 2.500 to the kids Aids orphanage in Addis as well. (Mother Teresa's sisters)
*  £ 5,000 to Assegid Negash from Addis Ababa who runs the FDIA project for street children in Addis. He takes kids off the streets, feeds and clothes them and educates them. Fantastic work he does
(More details coming soon)

Faith Friends

Year 13 students volunteer their time to be trained as leaders and then go out into the local schools to help primary 4 pupils prepare for first Holy Communion and primary 7 pupils prepare for Confirmation.

The schools involved are;

  • John the Baptist Boys
  • John the Baptist Girls
  • Oliver Plunkett
  • Holy Child

In recent years the number of volunteers has been very encouraging and reports from the primary school say they do an excellent job.

The training received helps the students become more mature and they receive a certificate in leadership to add to their Record of Achievement.
